Last week the Book Arts Studio of the University of Michigan Library hosted the first University of Michigan Book Arts Symposium (on the 26th and 27th of October). This online Symposium was developed to highlight and build meaningful connections between the various book arts works, projects, and initiatives that members of the University of Michigan and Washtenaw county communities are engaged in. The Symposium was well attended by not just members of our community here in southeast Michigan but also included attendees from around the country.

There were many other members of our UofM, Washtenaw County, and southeast Michigan communities that could have shared their work and projects at the conference. However, given time restrictions this was not possible this year.
We hope that by organizing this event we might have made some small contribution towards the future of book arts learning, teaching, and collaboration at the University of Michigan, in our region, and nationally/internationally.

Please join us for the first University of Michigan Book Arts Symposium. This Symposium was conceived of and developed in an effort to build community, promote a sense of unity, and cultivate an atmosphere of collaboration and connection across the multiple manifestations of the book arts programs and educational initiatives on the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus. The University of Michigan Library’s Book Arts Studio is organizing this Symposium to highlight the work being done by book arts educators, students, and community members that make up the unique fabric of book arts at the University of Michigan and related Washtenaw County communities.
The format of the Symposium will consist of two separate virtual evening sessions in which four presenters will have 15 minutes to share a short presentation about a project that they are working on or a facet of their book arts related work that they are passionate about. Following each evening’s four presentations, there will be an approximately thirty minute allotment of time for Q&A or discussion.
