These works explore themes of longing, alienation, and death and in so doing engage with our epoch by drawing our attention to the state of metaphysical closure within which we find ourselves, a state that ironically so often prevents emotional closure. Music is often touted the universal language par excellence. And yet, much of music’s appeal is its lack of transparency. That makes it a strikingly apt vehicle to convey emotions of estrangement. From Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde to Balanese Wayang, musical performance often speaks to the impossibility of complete communication. This recital falls squarely within this tradition.
