In 2016, the University of Michigan began implementing a new technology, called Canvas, to house its courses online. Up to that point, the online learning platform used University-wide was called CTools, an online learning management system developed at U-M whose management worked out of what is now the Duderstadt Center’s Design Lab 1.

As CTools phased out and Canvas phased in, Design Lab 1 began to transition into the hybrid classroom and makerspace it is now. Through these changes, Design Lab 1 has continued to be a space that fosters creativity, community, and innovation.
