Two weeks ago, Marc Morisseau—former Duderstadt Center trainee and now an Academy Award–winning visual effects producer for Hollywood films and AAA games—joined Professor Melissa Gross’s Kinesiology class for a virtual guest lecture.

During the talk, Marc reflected on his early passion for animation and motion capture, developed through training with Steffen Heise at the Visualization Studio. He shared how that foundation propelled him to Los Angeles and helped shape his career in the visual effects industry. Marc also walked students through today’s animation workflows, sharing behind-the-scenes footage from professional production sets.

The highlight of the presentation focused on Marc’s work on Avatar. Through behind-the-scenes examples, he demonstrated how the Avatar team revolutionized filmmaking by integrating motion capture and animation—and discussed some of the most technically challenging scenes he worked on for Avatar: The Way of Water.
