Duderstadt Center
Gallery
The Gallery is an ever-changing space introducing new work every 2-6 weeks. Our gallery provides an exhibition venue for a wide range of creative talents from across the University. The exhibits can be two- or three-dimensional, from fine art to engineering design projects, technology-based interactive displays, or performance art. Artifacts can be free standing, placed on pedestals (which we provide), or hung on the walls and from the unistrut ceiling structure. The gallery space consists of a 2600-square-foot octagonal room fronted by a long glass wall for increased visibility.

Receptions and Social Events

Receptions and meals may be held in conjunction with exhibits. If the Gallery is already booked for an exhibit, unaffiliated receptions or events will not be allowed. Receptions and events not associated with an exhibit may be booked in the Gallery no more than one month in advance, and only if the participants have a relevant connection to the university.
The Gallery will hold up to thirteen 60-inch round tables, seating eight each, for a total capacity of 104. There is a small catering kitchen next to the Gallery that contains a refrigerator, two microwave ovens, a stove top and three ovens. Arrangements for catering, rental and setup of equipment, and cleanup are made through the user’s choice of caterer.
Gallery Request
We welcome applications from the U-M community to exhibit in the Duderstadt Center Gallery. Proposals are reviewed and accepted based on a projects support for learning, teaching, research, portfolio development, or course/degree requirements with added weight given to original work by U-M students, faculty, or staff. We also consider whether a project is suitable for an ‘exhibition’ venue and can be completed within the available time frame.
To reserve the gallery, please complete the Gallery Request Form and Gallery User Agreement Form. Questions may be directed to gallery manager Kathi Reister at (734) 763-0606 or [email protected].
Note: You must be logged into a University of Michigan Google account in order to view the scheduling calendar.
Gallery Resources
The Duderstadt Center Gallery offers a diverse set of resources to support exhibitions of varying formats and needs. Explore the sections below for details on layout, display options, lighting, technology, and staffing support.
A limited number of tables, chairs and easels are available with at least 2 weeks notice.
Pedestals are available for displaying 3-dimensional pieces. Sizes include:
- 2 – 59 l x 22.75 w x 32.5 h w/lockable glass display tops
- 5 – 24 l x 24 w x 42 h
- 5 – 17 l x 17 w x 42 h
- 4 – 48 l x 24 w x 80 h
The Gallery walls are 10.5 feet high and offer 100 linear feet of hanging space. The floor will hold approximately 9-10 average size structures and 4-5 larger works comfortably. The walls are lined with fabric-covered, sound dampening material that is similar to a bulletin board, allowing paper and light weight matted pieces to be pinned directly to the wall. There is a track and rod system for hanging framed work and heavier pieces.
Airline cable with adjustable hardware is available to hang artifacts from the Unistrut ceiling system. The Unistrut structure is 10 feet 7 inches from the floor and will hold up to 8 loads of 500 lbs. each (at least 5 feet apart) or 16 loads of 250 lbs. each (at least 2-1/2′ apart).
The glass wall of the Gallery, and the glass doors in the Connector Hall may be opened to load-in large objects.
The Gallery is equipped with a professional audio system and a range of technology to support exhibitions, events, presentations, and installations. Technology is managed by Duderstadt Center staff – connect with our team early if your event has specific technical needs.
Sound System
The Gallery’s audio is built around a Behringer X32 Rack digital mixing console – a 40-input professional-grade mixer with a built-in Dante network card and a dedicated closed audio network. This means the system can support sophisticated live sound, networked audio devices, and complex multi-source routing well beyond typical gallery setups. The system includes an iPad Pro for mixing throughout the venue.
Four JBL Control 28 speakers are mounted on the brick columns in the corners of the octagonal space. Stereo imaging can be oriented in any of four directions or configured to fill the room evenly, making the system flexible for everything from background music at a reception to directional sound for an installation or performance.
For larger events – particularly when the gallery doors open to adjacent spaces – the system can be extended with powered loudspeakers on stands for real backline-level coverage and volume.
Microphones
Two Shure digital wireless handheld microphones are available and additional wired microphones are available upon request.
Lighting
There are track lights with dimmers (spot and flood) on the Unistrut. There is also indirect fluorescent lighting around the perimeter of the room and natural lighting through the glass wall. It can be difficult to darken the room.
iMacs
The gallery is equipped with 5 iMacs to meet different needs.
Student Staff monitor the Gallery during open hours, noon to 6:00 PM, Tuesday – Friday, and Sunday. We have recently added evening hours on Thursday nights from 6-9:00 PM.
The gallery is closed on Saturday and Monday. The Gallery is locked during off hours, with an alarm security system that can be armed. While onsite, exhibits are covered by a blanket university insurance policy.
