How to Build Your Mic Locker

February 15, 2019 | 6:15 PM – 7:00 PM

Matthew McGlynn

Description: Matthew McGlynn will break down microphones by transducer type, then break down condensers by both capsule design and circuit topology, in order to create a classification system that predicts (to some degree) what an unfamiliar microphone will sound like.

This analytical approach can fuel not only the next microphone purchase decision, but also the decision of what mic to reach for next in a session. Understanding WHY mics sound the way they do is a valuable tool. Experienced audio engineers develop this experientially over years, but we can shortcut that process significantly.

Presenter Bio:

Matthew McGlynn‘s deep experience with hundreds of microphones over many years — learning how they’re built, and why they sound the way they do — is documented within the online microphone database at RecordingHacks.com. His second company is MicParts.com, a DIY electronics kit manufacturer. His third company builds microphones under the name Roswell Pro Audio.
