Media Creation and Performance with TouchDesigner, Workshop*

Brief Description: TouchDesigner is an application development tool for making interactive experiences, architectural projections, puppeteered characters, music visuals, video servers, data visualizations and installation art. TouchDesigner has been used in projects for Walt Disney Imagineering, the films Gravity and Alien Covenant, WhiteVOID’s Kinectic Light System, Cirque de Soleil (Volta),  Day For Night FestivalPrada, Google, MIT Media LabBlizzcon, Amon Tobin’s ISAM,  PlastikmanRush and many more.

We will look at a variety of projects made with TouchDesigner and the architecture and capabilities of the software, plus some of its new features.

We will also look at how TouchDesigner is used by students, researchers and educators for a wide variety of pursuits in academia and coursework.

*Equipment that participants need to bring along:

A 3-button (or 2 button with clickable scroll wheel) is necessary!

Participants should bring their own laptop with successfully installed and keyed TouchDesigner 099 and a three-button mouse. A minimum of 1GB GPU memory with the most recent drivers is recommended; to make sure please check the official system requirements.

Prepare Your Laptop

Please install the latest build of TouchDesignerr 099 available here.

If you haven’t updated your graphics drivers in a long time, it would be a good idea to check for new ones at Nvidia.com or AMD.com.

Open TouchDesigner to make sure everything is working. If this is the first time running TouchDesigner on this laptop it will ask you to create a key. You will need to be a member at www.derivative.cato create a key, you can register here.

Presenter Bio:

Greg Hermanovic co-founded and leads Derivative, the creators of TouchDesigner. Greg is an engineer and designer who has worked in interactive realtime 3D graphics since 1974. He drew his first pixel on a CRT display in the mid-Atlantic Ocean during a 1974 UN global weather research project. For the US Space Shuttle’s CanadArm robotic manipulator, Greg helped develop the astronaut training simulator and control system. Greg co-founded and is a partner of Side Effects Software, makers of Houdini, where he received two Academy Awards for the advancement of procedural visual effects tools in the film industry. He also does experimental live visuals for small electronic music events.
