When Replacement Parts Don’t Exist, We Print Them

A 3D printing prototype

Fabrication Underground

Fabrication Underground, the Duderstadt Center’s hub for 3D printing and prototyping, supports projects across campus—from North Campus to the heart of Michigan Stadium and Crisler Arena.

When Crisler Arena Facilities Manager Nathan Moseley struggled to find replacement wall plates for the arena, he reached out to Fabrication Underground for help. After receiving a sample plate, the team recreated the part in CAD software and produced prototype versions to test the fit before delivering a finalized design.

Using the Fabrication Underground 3D Printing Service, Moseley was then able to order ten custom plates to solve the issue.“It was proving impossible to find replacements for these, so this was a great solution for us,” Moseley said.
