Resources for Exhibitors

About

The Gallery is an ever-changing space introducing new work every 2-6 weeks. Our gallery provides an exhibition venue for a wide range of creative talents from across the University. The exhibits can be two- or three-dimensional, from fine art to engineering design projects, technology-based interactive displays, or performance art. Artifacts can be free standing, placed on pedestals (which we provide), or hung on the walls and from the unistrut ceiling structure. The gallery space consists of a 2600-square-foot octagonal room fronted by a long glass wall for increased visibility.

The Gallery’s glass wall and the large glass doors in the Connector Hall both open, providing access for large structures and allowing for open-air events — weather permitting.

Receptions

Receptions or meals may be held in conjunction with exhibits. If the Gallery is already booked for an exhibit, unaffiliated meals or receptions will not be allowed. Meals and receptions not associated with an exhibit may be booked in the Gallery no more than one month in advance, and only if the participants have a relevant connection to the university.

The Gallery will hold up to thirteen 60-inch round tables, seating eight each, for a total capacity of 104. There is a small catering kitchen next to the Gallery that contains a refrigerator, two microwave ovens, a stove top and three ovens. Arrangements for catering, rental and setup of equipment, and cleanup are made through the user’s choice of caterer.

Reservations

To reserve the gallery, please fill out the Gallery Request Form on this page. Questions may be directed to gallery manager Kathi Reister at (734) 763-0606 or kreister@umich.edu.

Hanging

The Gallery walls are 10.5 feet high and offer 100 linear feet of hanging space. The floor will hold approximately 9-10 average size structures and 4-5 larger works comfortably. The walls are lined with fabric-covered, sound dampening material that is similar to a bulletin board, allowing paper and light weight matted pieces to be pinned directly to the wall. There is a track and rod system for hanging framed work and heavier pieces.

Airline cable with adjustable hardware is available to hang artifacts from the unistrut ceiling system. The unistrut structure is 10 feet 7 inches from the floor and will hold up to 8 loads of 500 lbs. each (at least 5 feet apart) or 16 loads of 250 lbs. each (at least 2-1/2′ apart).

The glass wall of the Gallery, and the glass doors in the Connector Hall may be opened to load-in large objects.

Lighting

There are track lights with dimmers (spot and flood) on the unistrut. There is also indirect fluorescent lighting around the perimeter of the room and natural lighting through the glass wall. It can be difficult to darken the room.

Sound/Technology

The gallery has a sound system and 2 microphones for use during events. The room has a poured stone floor, with power and networking outlets approximately every 10 feet. There are an additional twelve power outlets on the base of the surrounding walls, excluding the front glass wall. The hard surfaces and shape of the Gallery make it a very “live” room.

The Gallery has 5 Mac computers with monitors for use during exhibitions. A limited number of additional computers, large monitors and projection equipment may be available with advance notice.

Furniture/Pedestals

A limited number of tables, chairs and easels are available with at least 2 weeks notice.

Pedestals are available for displaying 3-dimensional pieces. Sizes include:

  • 5 – 24 l x 24 w x 42 h
  • 5 – 17 l x 17 w x 42 h
  • 4 – 48 l x 24 w x 80 h
  • 2 – 59 l x 22.75 w x 32.5 h w/lockable glass display tops
