January 10-21, 2024

Opening Reception: January 14, at 12:00 p.m.

The University of Michigan Department of Dance presents Bachelor of Fine Arts capstone project Pivot. The walk-through exhibit features choreography filmed for virtual reality by graduating senior Rileigh Goldsmith.

Rileigh Goldsmith’s senior dance thesis project “Pivot” is an immersive virtual reality
exhibition designed as a sensorial walk-through experience, featuring VR headsets for an
up-close and engaging viewing encounter. This groundbreaking project combines 360 degree dance
performances with introspective prompts, guiding viewers through themes of forging new paths
and shedding ties which no longer serve them. In each performance, viewers may navigate the
virtual reality space as they choose, free to gravitate towards what captivates them. As the very
first undergraduate dance student at the University of Michigan to explore virtual reality within
her thesis, Goldsmith encourages viewers to come with open minds, ready to step into a world in
which we are empowered to walk our own paths.

The gallery is located in the Duderstadt Center, 2281 Bonisteel Blvd, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday & Sunday from 12pm-6pm. Sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative, ArtsEngine and SMTD Excel. For more information, please visit https://smtd.umich.edu/departments/dance/
